The month of May saw our AGM and final night of the season. We decided to end on a fun note with another ‘Balloon Debate’. The idea is that a hot air balloon, heading for an uninhabited island, is running out of fuel and needs to lose one of its occupants otherwise we all sink into the sea.
Club members were assigned specific roles, such as Gardener, Entertainer, Engineer or Masseuse, and each had to argue their case for remaining in the balloon. How useful would each be to a new community setting up from scratch? Would a Sailor, promising escape if we built a boat, be better than a Weaver who could make clothes to keep us warm? Would a Dentist, equipped with some tools and anaesthetic, take preference over a Clerk of the Works with his tape measure and stopwatch?
Everyone had a lot of fun arguing to stay in the balloon, and votes were cast over 3 stages, whittling the occupants down to just 3. In the end, Manuel da Silva, the Entertainer with his 3 packs of cards, ukulele and silly hat, was deemed to be most superfluous to requirements and ruthlessly cast overboard by the pilot, Maggie Barlow.
We take our summer break now and return on Monday, 2nd September. We meet at Karter’s Café, 20, Church Street, Lutterworth, from 7.30 to 9.30 pm, 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month from May to September.
