Could you speak on the theme of ‘Play’ for up to 3 minutes, with only a few seconds to think about it? That was the challenge faced by club members in the recent annual club Topics Contest. Sue Hanger was more than up to the task, beating 7 other competitors with a superb, impassioned speech about the importance of play to the development of young children.
The same night saw the annual Evaluation Contest, where visiting Roy Sutton from Barwell Cedars Speakers Club gave a speech entitled ‘The Wordsmiths’, to be evaluated by 6 contestants. Roy’s focus was on TV commentators, such as those in snooker or horse-racing, and he thoroughly enjoyed himself mimicking their vocal styles. Allan Rimmer won the contest with a well-structured and reasoned evaluation of Roy’s speech.
Such is the enthusiasm of our new members that many took part in the contests, making for a great evening. Well done to them, and congratulations to both Sue and Allan, who go forward to represent Lutterworth Speakers in the Area contests.
We meet 1st & 3rd Mondays of the month. If you are interested in developing public speaking skills in a supportive and fun environment, come along to Karter’s Café, 20, Church Street, Lutterworth.
