More success came our way last month when Maggie Barlow won the Area Speech Contest with a speech entitled ‘Rainbow’ – a look at the science and art of rainbows, with a nod to Judy Garland. Maggie will join Allan Heggs, our Area Topics Contest winner, in competing at District level later this month, and club members wish them the best of luck. A win for either would take them through to the national finals – a considerable challenge, as the competition gets stiffer with every step up the ladder.
Our preceding club Speech Contest was a hotly contested affair. Seven members took part, and in addition to rainbows, we learned about roads, planes, photography, sign language, and the meaning of January. Allan Rimmer gave a detailed analysis of the phrase ‘The only excuse is death‘ – a different approach, but no less interesting.
Developing an argument is another aspect of speaking we cover from time to time. Mary Evans held a fascinating Topics session where we each had to bid for money for a particular fund at work – a challenge in the art of pleading.
We give a warm welcome to visitors and guests. We meet 1st & 3rd Mondays of the month, 7.30 – 9.30pm at the Indian Lounge on George St, Lutterworth. Visit our website LutterworthSpeakersClub.com, for more information or ring Maggie Barlow on 01455 207774.
